The only surviving roman shield (of its kind)

Updated: Aug 29, 2022

Yale refers to this shield as "the only known surviving example of the semicylindrical shield" However I should note other pieces of shields have been found but not enough to reconstruct. Such as a recovered shield boss which is currently in the British Museum.

There is also an oval-style shield that was found that may be roman but it's unclear. That's the Scutum of Fayum.

The shield in the video was found in Dura-Europos, in modern-day Syria. Here is a link with more information: https://artgallery.yale.edu/collections/objects/5959
